Back in the 1990s, I wanted to do a piece about the person who would be King or Queen of the United States if George Washington had chosen to be King of this country.  People magazine and NBC showed some interest, but let the discussion die out.  Several years later I shared my findings with and they toyed with it for awhile.  In 2008, Ancestry renewed interest and asked their staff family historian, Megan Smolenyak, to revisit the subject.  She too discovered that because George Washington left no heirs, the monarch who would reign today would be a descendant of George’s brother, Samuel Washington.  Newsweek picked up Megan’s research and published it on October 7, 2008.  Who would be king today?  Paul Emery Washington of San Antonio, Texas.  He’s a year younger than Queen Elizabeth II.
