Joseph Melcher immigrated in 1881 to the United States from Durmersheim, Baden, Germany.  In 1900, he lived in New Orleans, Louisiana with his wife, Maggie, and their four children.  Their oldest son had been born in Ohio and Joseph had become a naturalized citizen.
