Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Family History

Imagine sitting down with a photograph of a document that has stumped your family for three generations. It is a baptismal register from a village church, the ink faded to a whisper, the words looping across the page in a script that seems indecipherable. Previously, you could hire a specialist, spend months teaching yourself the old handwriting, or simply give up. But today, because of advanced  AI technology, you can upload that image and watch a computer transcribe it, translate it, and summarize what it says in less time than you ever thought possible.

A revolution is underway in the field of family history. Artificial intelligence, the same technology now reshaping medicine, law, and art, has arrived in the genealogist’s toolkit. It is already changing how we find records, how we read them, and how we make sense of what they reveal. Yet as with any powerful tool, its promise arrives alongside real limits. Understanding both is what separates a helpful shortcut from a costly mistake. What follows is a tour of what AI can do for your family history today, where it is heading, and why the human researcher remains at the very heart of the work.

Reading the Unreadable

For centuries, the greatest obstacle to genealogical discovery was not that the records failed to exist, but instead sorting through the information contained on each page. Billions of deeds, wills, probate files, and court papers sat in archives, digitized as images yet effectively invisible, because searching them meant reading every page by hand. Artificial Intelligence has begun to dissolve that barrier. FamilySearch’s Full-Text Search, introduced at RootsTech 2024 and rolled out as a standard tool in August 2025, uses handwriting-recognition technology to turn nearly two billion document images into searchable text. For the first time, you can type an ancestor’s name and find them inside a handwritten land deed that no human had ever indexed.

The same technology is available to the individual researcher. Tools such as Transkribus can be trained to read a particular clerk’s hand or an unfamiliar historical script, converting a page of eighteenth-century cursive into clean, readable text.

Breaking the Language Barrier

Handwriting is only half the challenge. Many of our ancestors left their traces in Latin, German, Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, in scripts and abbreviations that even fluent modern speakers struggle to decipher. Here too, AI has made remarkable strides. MyHeritage’s AI transcription tools can now recognize, transcribe, and translate handwritten historical records, including notoriously difficult scripts such as the old German Kurrentschrift found in Palatinate parish registers. General-purpose assistants like ChatGPT can take a photograph of a Latin marriage entry or a Spanish civil registration and return a plain-English translation along with an explanation of the record’s structure.

For anyone researching across borders, as so many of us do, this is a genuine breakthrough. A researcher tracing a family from a small town in Mexico or a village in southern Italy no longer has to choose between learning a new language and abandoning the search. That said, these translations are not flawless. The tools tend to stumble precisely where it matters most, on dates and surnames, so a transcription that looks authoritative on the screen still has to be checked against the original before it earns a place in your tree.

Making Sense of DNA

DNA testing already transformed genealogy, but it also created a new kind of problem: too much information. A single test can return tens of thousands of matches, an ocean of anonymous cousins that few people have the time or training to navigate. Increasingly, AI and machine-assisted tools are helping to chart those waters. Programs that cluster matches into family groups, map shared segments, and estimate likely relationships can turn an overwhelming list of names into an organized picture of how the pieces fit together.

This is where the promise of automation meets the reality of a deeply human puzzle. Clustering software can group your matches, but it cannot tell you that two of those clusters converge on a great-grandfather who was never named on a birth certificate. Complications such as endogamy, where intermarriage within a community inflates the amount of shared DNA, can fool an algorithm into suggesting relationships that never existed. The technology sorts and suggests; the interpretation still belongs to a researcher who understands how inheritance actually behaves across generations.

Restoring Faces and Telling Stories

Not all of AI’s contributions are about finding records. Some are about bringing them to life. Photo tools can now colorize a black-and-white portrait, sharpen a blurred face, estimate the decade a picture was taken from the clothing and setting, and even gently animate a still photograph so that a great-grandmother seems to turn and smile. Used thoughtfully, these tools can make a distant ancestor feel suddenly, movingly present.

A second kind of assistant helps with the writing and the thinking. FamilySearch now offers an AI research assistant that suggests promising next steps in your tree, and platforms such as Storied can help draft a family narrative from a bundle of facts. General assistants can brainstorm research strategies, summarize a dense will, or explain the historical context of a record, from what a “cordwainer” did for a living to why an entire village might have emigrated in a single year. These tools do not replace the researcher’s curiosity; they give it more room to roam.

Additionally, the major platforms have also turned AI toward the tree itself. FamilySearch’s AI Research Assistant, available from the home page, works like a knowledgeable helper looking over your shoulder. It studies who is already attached to a person in the shared family tree, scans FamilySearch’s billions of records and the wider web, and suggests relatives you might add or sources you may have missed. You can even question it in an ordinary chat, the way you would a research partner. Ancestry offers a similar companion in its “Get Ideas” feature, which reviews a person’s tree, timeline, and known relationships to surface research opportunities and flag the gaps, such as a missing birth or census record, most likely to move a line forward. Both are genuine time-savers for extending a stalled branch, though, as we will see, their suggestions are only ever a starting point.

Promise and Peril

For all its power, AI carries a danger that every family historian must understand. These systems are built to sound confident and helpful, and they will happily invent an answer when they do not have one (called hallucination). Ask a chatbot for a source and it may produce a citation to a book that does not exist, a census entry that was never recorded, or an ancestor conjured entirely from thin air, all described with perfect authority. This is not a rare glitch. Studies of AI-generated references have found that more than half can be fabricated or contain errors, and the genealogical community has already watched invented records and imaginary relatives get passed along as fact.

The problems do not stop at fabrication. AI can quietly misread a date or a name, reflect the biases baked into its training data, and raise genuine concerns about the privacy of living relatives whose DNA and personal details flow through these systems. None of this means the tools should be avoided. It means they should be treated as a brilliant, tireless, and occasionally unreliable assistant, never as the final word. The oldest rule in genealogy has never mattered more: verify every claim against the original record.

Why Expertise Still Matters

It is tempting, watching a machine read a centuries-old page in seconds, to imagine that the genealogist is on the way to becoming obsolete. The opposite is true. AI is a research assistant, not a researcher. It can transcribe a document, but it cannot weigh two conflicting records and decide which one to trust. It can suggest a relationship, but it cannot apply the Genealogical Proof Standard, resolve which of three men with the same name is your ancestor, or recognize when a tidy conclusion is simply too tidy to be true. And it certainly cannot sit with a family through the joy, grief, or shock of an unexpected discovery, or decide with care how, and whether, to reach out to a newly found biological relative.

Genealogy has always been about more than data. It is the work of restoring identity, memory, and belonging, of turning names on a page back into people. AI accelerates the mechanical parts of that work: the searching, the sorting, the reading. But the judgment, the ethics, and the meaning remain stubbornly, wonderfully human. The future of family history does not belong to artificial intelligence alone, nor to the traditional researcher working without it. It belongs to the partnership between them.
